You may be wondering, "Who is this person, and why is she making these things?" The short answer is,
"Valerie Tucker, and I just can't help it." I've been creating art for most of my life, but probably first
really applied myself to it in college. I received a B.A. degree in Fine Arts from the University of
California at Santa Barbara, and did graduate work in painting at San Jose State University.
Traditional oil paint is my primary medium. However, in addition to brushes I'm just as likely to use rags,
combs, sponges, oil pastels and my hands to make marks and move paint around on the canvas. I like to spend
time working the surfaces and building them up in rich layers.
I pay close attention to intuition and the emotional responses in myself that show up while I'm painting.
I welcome serendipity. You may recognize an element of play in my work ... a whimsy moment ... and hopefuly
something unexpected.
